Guatemala is one of the most food insecure countries in Latin America, threatened by extreme weather conditions and more than three decades of civil unrest. Women and children are suffering the most from this dire situation. Mothers are increasingly unable to provide much needed food for their young children and often cannot breastfeed their infants due to malnutrition. Without any other alternatives, many mothers are turning to poor quality substitutes such as sugar water as early as the first three months of the child's life. As a result, almost 50% of children under 5 suffer from chronic malnutrition, which is the highest rate in Latin America and the Caribbean, and sixth highest in the world.
Your gift of $70 will provide 18 months worth of food for a child under 2 years and help the World Food Program end hunger and malnutrition in countries like Guatemala.
